Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Saturday 05.02.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow in the mountains. Rain on snow will weaken the snowpack in the lower areas. Naturally released avalanches can occur both in the alpine and the lower areas.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 4. February 2022

Mountain weather

Friday 4. February 2022

12 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Gale from southeast, changing to strong breeze from the southeast during the afternoon. -14 °C to -3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 5. February 2022

6 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Moderate gale from southeast, changing to gale from the south during the afternoon. -9 °C to 1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
